The New Facebook Genders and Pronouns

Gender Pronouns Facebook

The fight for LGBT equality and rights is most definitely not an easy one but each day miniature steps have been made towards making everybody comfortable and able to accept who they are and the gender they are inside. This global issue is trending and Tumblr users have taken huge stands on it but they aren’t the only social media outlet who are making changes for the greater human good.

If you don’t recall or didn’t know at all then I have some news for you. Last year Facebook released 50 options for selecting your gender. It’s no longer just male and female but you can choose between a huge range with some examples being: transgender, gender queer and gender questioning. This was remarkable and a huge step but still we found genders on the edge and not knowing if they fit into any of the boxes provided. This is an overall improvement in terms of genders and pronouns for the massive social network. There was still work to be done.

So, just recently Facebook went one step further. They added in an empty box as a 59th option that allows you to fill in the blank. No longer will you have to bite your nails about which gender options suits you best but you can now add in your own.

It gets better! You can also click and choose which pronoun that you’d like to be identified as. Facebook was sure to announce it on their Facebook Diversity page on February 26th, 2015.

Their post said:

“We recognize that some people face challenges sharing their true gender identity with others, and this setting gives people the ability to express themselves in an authentic way.”

So, in case you didn’t know or you were forced to fill in a box that didn’t define you before you can now go to “Edit Profile” under you name, scroll down to Contact and Basic Info and underneath Basic Information put the gender that you are.

Hopefully next they will add a custom option for gender that you are interested in but we’re pretty happy they are making great changes!
