Madonna is back with a new tour called Rebel Heart. She is currently at No. 1 with her single for Living For Love. She will kick off the tour, Rebel Heart, on August 29th in Miami. Later dates will include performances in New York, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. Madonna has been considered a gay icon for decades. This pop culture queen regularly speaks up for the gay community. She was first was introduced to the gay community while still a teenager as her ballet teacher, Christopher Flynn, took Madonna to local gay bars in Detroit, Michigan. Flynn told Madonna that she had something to offer to this world and he told her her to walk away from a full scholarship from University of Michigan to peruse her career as a professional dancer.

CNN reported on May 17, 2010 a gay couple in Malawi who celebrated their union in a traditional engagement ceremony could be sentenced to up to 14 years of hard labor, according to lawyers familiar with the case. In June 2010 Madonna released a statement regarding these two men who were jailed;

As a matter of principle, I believe in equal rights for all people, no matter what their gender, race, color, religion, or sexual orientation. This week, Malawi took a giant step backward. The world is filled with pain and suffering; therefore, we must support our basic human right to love and be loved. I call upon the progressive men and women of Malawi—and around the world—to challenge this decision in the name of human dignity and equal rights for all.”

Madonna stated on The Ellen Show that “In fact, I wouldn’t have a career if it weren’t for the gay community.” She new she was different than most and found friends and comfort being around the gay community.
