Gay Days at Disney World

Gay Days at Disney World

Last week (June 2nd to June 8th), the Magical Kingdom got a bit more Magical with Gay Days at Disney World! Each and every year, Gay and Lesbian Disney lovers from around the world descend upon Disney World in Orlando Florida. It began in 1991 but the concept and name really developed over the last few years. Now it is estimated that as many as 40 000 to 50 000 visit the park during the event. Attendees wear red shirts as a show of solidarity and for the last couple of years you could witness a sea of red all over the park.

Over the years, Disney as a brand has not been very gay-friendly. Prominent gay characters simply do not exist in typical Disney narratives. This is one reason why the entertainment giant has received some criticism, especially from same-sex parents. Gay Days at Disney is a unique opportunity and while it is not promoted or sponsored by Disney, they seem to understand the potential and the need for Gay Days in the park.

For many of us, the event is a chance to relive our childhoods. Too many of us have had to battle adversity and prejudice during the early period of our lives. Coming to grips with our sexuality was a big one. Gay Days at Disney allows adults to shake off those old feelings and really let loose. The event also helps parents face real questions head-on. Children of same-sex parents can interact, chat and form friendships based on common goals and common obstacles they’ve had to face.

If you’re planning a trip to Disney World or know you’ll be in Orlando Florida for the first week in June, pay a visit to the Magical Kingdom. The experience will be well worth it!

Happy Pride Month!
