Finding Support After Coming Out

20160208-AM-Blog-Finding Support After You Come Out-1Here is a story from one of our users, Andrew. He recently came out and wanted to share the experience to help others.

You will go through a roller coaster of emotions before, during and after coming out. The one emotion you should never feel is embarrassment or being ashamed of who you are. For me, coming out was very difficult as I was really worried how my immediate family would react. I never felt ashamed about being gay, but more scared of loosing the people closest to me. I was really worried about telling my parents because of their beliefs and the way they think. Surprisingly my dad came around a lot quicker than my mom, and it did take time. My parents fundamental worry was that it would make my life a struggle.

After my immediate family knew and had time to adjust I told my close friends and extended family. Then I made a decision to just live my life as honestly as possible. Whenever I met new people, friends, co-workers I present myself as who I am. Sure, so far the road has had some ups and downs, but deep down in my core I was happy and I wasn’t going to let someone else take that away from me.

Luckily, finding support after coming out wasn’t too difficult as I my family eventually came around. But at first I needed someone to talk too. I decided to find online gay support groups and talked to a few men on AllMale.com. At first I posted for friendship and just started chatting. The guys I talked to were actually pretty cool as they had went through a very similar situation.

Just remember to be you and don’t let anyone bring you down. Live with pride and you just might attract the right man into your life too.
