James Franco Comes Out

James Franco Comes Out

One of the things that’s very much part of my public image is the question of my sexuality. It’s not something that bothers me in the slightest. It hasn’t gone away and I get asked about it from all sides. It’s partly my doing and partly not my doing.” ~ James Franco

James Franco comes out as gay—well, at least half of him is. To say the least this get confusing so bare with me. James Franco has played gay characters in the past and it has led some to speculation about his real-life sexual orientation. In March James was interviewed for Four Two Nine magazine and the Editor-in-chief Kevin Sessums convinced Franco to speak on the gay question. Here is part of the interview where straight James interviews gay James:

Straight James: Let’s get substantial: are you fucking gay or what?

Gay James: Well, I like to think that I’m gay in my art and straight in my life. Although, I’m also gay in my life up to the point of intercourse, and then you could say I’m straight. So I guess it depends on how you define gay. If it means whom you have sex with, I guess I’m straight. In the twenties and thirties, they used to define homosexuality by how you acted and not by whom you slept with. Sailors would fuck guys all the time, but as long as they behaved in masculine ways, they weren’t considered gay.

Ultimately he describes his gayness as something separate from his sexuality. He will not have sex with men but does have a very gay side to him. He is an artist and there are many complex facets to his personality. Just like any artist, you hate it when boundaries are set upon you; I think that is why artists are artists in the first place. They see the world differently and can not live in a space with restrictions, rules and guidelines. James is who he is and he has never apologized for it, nor should he. For the people who are drawn to Franco and his style of creativity they are attracted to his carefree, fun nature to create and be a true artist.

James Franco’s latest project is The Adderall Diaries, a story about a writer stymied by past success, writers block, substance abuse, relationship problems and a serious set of father issues, Elliott’s cracked-out chronicle of a bizarre murder trial amounts to less than the sum of its parts.
