Gay Travel Guide: Berlin, Germany

Gay Travel Guide - Berlin

Vacations with your loved one are always a nice break far away from the stresses of the world. Unfortunately equality is not yet in place so sometimes a vacation can be more stressful for your everyday life. Thankfully, we found some of the top gay friendly vacation spots in the world and so for the next ten weeks we’ll let you in on our vacation secrets.

This week we give you a taste of the gay life in Berlin, Germany and it’s not for the faint of heart. Berlin has had a huge gay community since the 1920s and they are the world’s best for fetishes. In fact you can book a trip around Easter and visit the renowned Folsom Europe Festival in Berlin. It’s an annual BDSM and leather gay male festival held on Easter but everyone is welcome if they choose!

Where to stay:

Berlin is home to some of the best hotels, it’s absolutely impossible to pick one. Your best is to research them if you’re going and find one that surrounds the location you want to be and fits in your budget. The Arte Luise Kunsthotel is unique with each room featuring design and work by a different artist. Hotel Adlon Kempinski is where you want to go to feel like a celebrity. Some of the most notable people who have stayed there include Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo.

Where to eat:

You can always go to an upscale restaurant and splurge on a meal but vacations can get pricey. I would never suggest that you settle for something as low as McDonald’s. In fact, that would be very wrong. I suggest trying their street food. You get unique flavors but traditional German food. My favorite would be the Currywurst at Krasselts (it’s made in house, they even grind the pig themselves for the bratwurst.) It’s located at Steglitzer Damm 22.

Where to drink:

Head on over to Barbie Deinhoff’s. It’s shabby and run down but tacky and endearing. It has bright pink walls, a hairdresser and puts on live gay shows. The atmosphere is fun and kitschy. It’s a mix of LGBT people drag queen, lesbians and gays but everybody is having a good time. It’s one of art curator, Lena Braun’s clubs in the city.

What to do:

There is so much today! I’ve already mentioned the cool clubs and fetish scenes but even if you’re not going all out you could celebrate gay pride or look at the tons and tons of art galleries and cafes they have. Berlin is huge for art it seems that almost everything is done by an artist and has been turned into an art gallery from the cafes to the bars and the hotels. There is also so much food. It may be a tourist definition but they don’t lose their fun and culture. The only problem you’ll have is trying to do everything in only a short amount of time.
