Awkward Dates

Awkward Dates

It’s sad to say but being gay comes with some baggage. This baggage is awkward dates. It’s not to say that straight people can’t have awkward dates but it’s always a little different for gay people some who have to live a whole life of awkward stares and things that we just shouldn’t go through. So today I present a collection of the five awkward date scenarios you might find yourself on if you’re a gay men.

  1. The New Guy

That’s right you’ve been out of the closet for who knows how long and somehow you stumbled across the new, not so sure guy. He’s constantly looking over his shoulder and either he hasn’t told his parents or he is on the verge of tears because they wouldn’t accept him. He doesn’t know how to communicate with you on a romantic level because he’s not used to it and the whole experience is awkward. You might call him again, you probably won’t but nonetheless you know what it’s like and you wish him the best.

  1. The Homophobes

You’re out on a date and everything is nice except for the fact that every time the worker pours the wine you get the dirtiest look that you can imagine. Or maybe it’s after the date when you’re walking around the park enjoying ice cream and all of a sudden somebody yells a slur from their car. Both your date and you have heard it before but it definitely stilts the date. It’s embarrassing that you can’t just enjoy a night together.

  1. The Overly Friendly

Forget the homophobes those are hurtful but happen. On the other end of the spectrum you have the yay gay people fawning over you. You’re trying to get to know somebody and all of a sudden someone is telling you they love and support you. It’s nice but you’re really just trying to get to know this person. Sometimes they’ll ask for pictures and you feel like melting into the sidewalk. Why can’t gays go on dates?

  1. The Co-Workers

When you’re out for dinner and the waiter or waitress just can’t seem to accept that you’re on a date. You’re called co-workers, brothers and/or cousins and it really just ruins the entire atmosphere. You wonder if you should even bother to clarify to them so you wait it out to see what your date does. Or you accidentally embarrass a really sweet waiter who profusely apologizes and adds a layer of awkward.

  1. The Hook Up

You’re pretty sure you weren’t on Grinder this time. It seems like your date can’t wait to get out of there and nail you. You’re starting to mature and look for a relationship and it just isn’t happening with this person. Beware of the signs, drinking a lot too quickly and constantly asking where you’re going after dinner, the move or wherever you are.

Everyday being gay becomes more accepted, which is OBVIOUSLY a great thing but sometimes the world is ignorant and cruel. Hopefully you get through enough awkward dates and find the one. Good luck!
